This town is a cultural center for the K’iche’ Maya and also home to the church of Santo Tomás, which features 18 stairs, each representing one month of the Maya Calendar year. Adjacent to the church is one of Guatemala's best artisan markets. The Huipiles from this region carry a distinctive symbolism, reflecting the Maya's profound connection with the cosmos. The predominant colors, brown and purple, signify the nobility of the area.
